It is slowly clicking

A reflection of Studio block 2 assignment

I am going to start of by saying i am absolutely enjoying i am doing so far, it is certain feeling when something starts clicking. It is all the stuff we are doing semester. I am slowly getting why we are getting so much freedom, why we doing what we are doing. It is all for the sake the process. It is what we are going to do in the future. We can be doing audio, a game, art but it all boils down to the process. Why did you do this, why that colour. That is the underlying skill we are getting taught in Colab. The fact we are doing “strange/weird” is something i am begging to appreciate because the fact that we think its weird or strange is a testament to the way think. So we have change it. The music assignment is not weird because it is a shock treatment to do something different. Think different, be different.

So this assignment in particular i wanted to analyse what is being asked of me. So the photo above is a list that i written influenced of my Integration assignment as i got a dictionary. The photo shows that the brief and the definition of words that i really didnt know. Proposal, consideration, speculative and conjecture. This really helped me to focus my efforts in what i wanted to make. This gave me a path to follow to my final outcomes.

Another thing is that for this assignment, instead of submitting a boring word text file, i made some sort of (terrible) infographics. Its a lot nice to look at instead of just a plain file. I decided to do this, because in part of what i mentioned above about standing out. There is nothing different from my text file, i made a power point and made some box and made it more pleasant to look at.

Just some of the little things i am trying to do to be different and think differently and standout

The value and importance of ideas coming together. Integration

This is a reflection on my assignment. First of all i am incredibly proud of my work. I personally felt i took a risk, from what i chose to focus on. I have 5 incredibly academic book, physics, applied discrete math, Eureka discoveries, dictionary and virtual reality book. I could have chosen to focus on the math aspect, i could have picked about the technical aspect of all the book the fact that each book holds incredible amount of technical university level of knowledge. And i guarantee that i was pretty close to going that route, but one fateful lecture, the lecturers said something about be crazy, be stupid, be wild, be out there, be less serious. And that is what i did. I took an incredibly serious topic and focus on what the are not about. And maybe this is a mistake, maybe i am being foolish in thinking that i can make something out of nothing. But i had fun. I made something that no one really thought of. It might be shallow, but it is funny. and i had fun making it.

there was something fun in trying to combine things that doesnt seem possible. Or going a different way, because people have already gone that way. to be unique is to forge your own path and it is something i am slowly learning from my time hear. And now i get the idea of playful methods ( a previous topic i tacked back at semester 1 2016) and it finally clicked. It didnt have to be a game to be playful or fun. Its the process. And it am having so much fun from all the topics i am facing currently. from studio 2 assignment to this assignment which apparently an opinion that is shared most of the class.

And now i am slowly appreciating what it really means to be not so directed. And from what i hear from the people in the year above me is that there is even less rules and direction, you make your own, you asses your own self and understand what is being asked and make something that will allows you to be different. Dont make a game for the sake of it being fun  and it being a game. Make a game because fundamentally criticizes why do schools need to be 5 days a week, or something that ask as deeper question. something that invokes emotion from the audience that they didnt really think before. That is what it means to be unique, that what it means to stand out. Think differently from the people around you. thats what going to make the difference between two people with the same topic. The underlying question of why, why are you doing it. This is why i am enjoying semester two so much more. Maybe it have not clicked all the way but somehow i am putting the pieces together. It is a journey and i cannot say that i have everything now but somehow, the little things around me are slowly falling into place.

truth be told i didnt read the dictionary as it is a reference book, but a book nonetheless and the other four books i “read”. There is something i learned in this topic. Since these books are not fictional novels, i found a technique in how to extract information without completely reading the entire thing. These were the things that the lecturers were talking about. to be able to get the idea of the book while saving time as reading five or more books in the span of two weeks is difficult, well difficult for me.Then i device a method in brainstorming what i think the books are going to be about for each of the five books and found the similarities across the books. then read the part in the books that i think where all the 5 books intersect. For example, the idea of revolutions. The eureka book talked about the finding of oil, that powered the industrial revolutions, in the physics book, Einsteins theory of special relativity rocked the scientific community at the time and explained the relationship of space and time to be the same thing. The dictionary says that Revolution, The act or process of rotating or revolving. A single rotation or turn. A complete change , such as that caused by the overthrow of a government or a political system. The virtual reality book is written back in the 90s, which first of all i didnt expect people where already tackling around the idea of virtual reality. and it talked about the idea of seeing people through the internet as a person. and all of these books tackled the idea of revolution. And this was the idea that i almost picked if not for the fact that the lecturer talked about being fun and be less serious. I also saw the benefit of putting them together. because the lecturers dont care how any of the books connect, but they care in your methods, in how you came up with your outcome, why not another? Why this? And personally i think this is what i am paying for. The ability to think differently from the people around me, to refocus or realign problems to my strength, to create a true outcome, not a solution. Maybe, in the future it is what it is all about, the ability to bring things together, from the most obscure to the obvious. And maybe that is what made Steve Jobs great. He combined a computer, and a phone in a way that outshone his competitors. Apple is not unique to the computer cellphone but they are the one the popularized and formulated a  way to instill to consumers that they had to change phones with every new iterations.

In the end i am happy i took the risk because i think this is what it really means to stand out. even if it is scary, because i dont know how the lecturers will react. Maybe i will get a bad grade, maybe i did the correct thing because i did my own thing instead of following someones idea of what A plus would look like. But my method of listening to the people around me, finding what made me laugh and finding out my inspirations and the formulating my own conclusion, my own final outcome allowed me to be different, to be unique, to standout.

Lecturers said to go crazy and be fun. Be less serious. Be curious. Do strange stuff.

A photo from my evernote of the connection distance

From looking at these books there is a connection based on distance. Eureka is in the middle because it is the the four other books connect to it. It is the book about inventions through out the decades. Physics is a bit closer than applied math to the discovery book because i think most of the discovery in this book were more physics based stuff which does involve Math but some things like Archimedes displacing water is all physics. And Discrete math particular developed later. The Virtual reality book were the same distance from math and physics and more closer to the eureka book compared to the other books because it is the most recent invention among these books compared to the rest of the literature.

Lastly the dictionary. why the dictionary you might ask? It is a book. People dont really think of it. The biggest connection is that all of them are written in English language. Not complicated enough? I am taking a creative stance on sticking with this.

Next part is why does the existing connection have to be the only connections? like why fundamental physics and applied analysis connection has to be only Linear partial Differential equations to explain heat equation through radiation of heat diffusion. because i think its been done before, it exist. How about looking at the book cover and notice that Eureka, Fundamental Physics and applied analysis all have hard covers. that is a connection that no one would dare to make. Is it weird, yes. Is it strange enough that the reason no one has done it is because it is stupid? maybe. But they said be creative and fun. Be different. So now the dictionary and  virtual reality is connected just because they are dont have hard back. How about colour shcemes? fundamental physics, virtual reality and eureka have the orange/red with black theme and the dictionary and applied math are both blue and they are connected that way. There is also a connection that all the books have have the word, ‘Will’ in the book. Will the name or where there is a will there is a way, none of it matters as long as there is a will. Other words include, i was there, in, out and many others. There are many way to connect books not because of their content, but the superficial things. the arbitrary things. Does it make it stupid or weird? Why does it have to be stupid or weird. No one really thinks of connecting things like that. They will connect them because of an underlying theme that holds the books together. Or a colour is the symbolizing theme of freedom. But why does it to be like that. Not everyone reads the books that people are getting. No one here is a mathematical genius, if they are they would be doing math.

I think it doesnt have to be the content. Let it be the superficial things and let it flow. Let it be that the connection of the two books be that they have the same page number. Or that they are same size. Because the books that i got are no doubt have been read before in this combination maybe save for the virtual reality book. But math, innovation, physics and dictionary are all used in the field of discovery and research. Even virtual reality is discovery. I want to move away from the obvious connection, to even the subtle ones and use the superficial and arbitrary connections.

I KNOW WHAT I AM GOING TO WRITE IN MY END OF YEAR COURSE REVIEW

https://www.flickr.com/photos/145598970@N03/albums/72157669615985224

this is my Link to my Research into Re framing questions. From our original topic we tackled the easy problem of overpopulation that is not a wicked problem of any kind. (sarcasm, in case it is not shown in text).

Big Note: its been a long 2 week. VERY VERY LONG. And even to the last days there were conflicting inputs from teachers to TAs to what is supposed to be on the Prezi document. So maybe we arent Right, just left.

The photos in the link above contains what the team and i did. From planning, to brainstorming, to planning again, to brainstorming, and it went on for a few cycle. As the due date was coming to a close, the team and i met on friday to work out the last few kinks and created the very verbose and unbelievably huge artwork and masterpiece fit for king to show our struggle in researching individual aspects of overpopulation that leads and finds questions about the many hands that overpopulation touches. It is the exploration, re-framing questions, questioning the obvious, looking from different angles that gavebirth to this magnificent Diagram the team Lovingly titled, Rabb Diagram, Roots Above and Branches Below. The three aspect of the name is a long and convoluted team decision that almost cost us our grade as we are getting to focused on the aesthetic side. But we were graciously saved by Ricardo, re-diverting our team to focus on the research and not the looks as this is supposed to be an unfinished document rather than a finished presentation.

personally i was very hesitant at first to move away from our initial idea of a tree based presentation as our base for our presentation (which it is not a presentation) because our teams magnificent and talented artist and drawer worked many nights on a tree diagram while being sick too. But i was reassured that it was okay since it is a talking point for her blog, re framing. Many times we looked at the brief and asked each other what is being asked of us on the prezi document and we found and stuck to a research based prezi and exploring avenues of something that we didnt think about before.

it is nice to be able to talk about closed door that we tried to explore even if it didnt bear to fruition, but it is a point of learning, to reflect.

EverNote +1

So here is my first run with evernote another addition to my Personal collecting and thought gathering technology.

at the moment it is incredibly basic. Note.

Basically it just shows my insight and inspiration when the lecturers talked about being less serious and be more fun and creative. I just wrote it.

its three lines and i think it is fine as i was able to expand and on this, which can be found on the post where i placed the clips from both websites.

so far it is pretty good from what i have experimented with. it has drawing capabilities, note taking, photo and write words about it, which i probably wont use much i have Flickr for that.

i do wish there is someway to link or share it on tumblr so i dont have to take a screenshot each time. Maybe there is a way, but havnt found it yet.

Inspirations

So i have my set of books, (i will take a photo of it later, dont have it with me) and in class both Laurent and Clint talked something i found inherently important to me. Dont be so serious. Be fun. Be creative in the connection of the books. and this really propelled my imagination in how i am going to create my final project for Integrative.

Lets talk about inspirations.

(via
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQgIwwKmjdo)

This video is from the YouTube channel called: You Suck at Cooking. Like the name suggest it is about how the creator ironically views his audience to be incompetent at food making. This channel is relatively new and his style is a combination of careful editing to mix the possible with impossible to create an entertaining video.

This  video is one of his early episodes that exploded in popularity, that it went ‘viral’ and it is about 7 ways of cutting and onion. The first is a traditional video of cutting an onion in a way that wont hurt or cut yourself. And after that it goes of the rails for example, throwing an onion in a wall to dice them or to karate chop an onion in half

His experimentation of both the possible and the impossible is very interesting to me. Because it creates and entertaining video. that anyone can watch even if they dont have any cooking experience. But the way he edits his video although obvious, mixed with the quick cut style of editing and voice over doesnt break the entertaining aspect of the entire video even if he doesnt show peoples faces  and only his hands. It is unexpected, effective and its humorous aspect is amazing without the traditional way to tell a joke with a question and a punchline.

Another inspiration is

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa-4IAR_9Yw

This video is from a youtube channel called Causally Explained. Just like the name suggest it is a channel that deals with everyday problems that is explained casually. This channel has a satirical approach to situations but has always an element of humanity. It makes fun of a situations 90 percent of the time and has one part called, Real talk with Causally Explains, where he gives real advice.

This video in particular is one his channels most popular videos and it tackles the issue if a guy can determine if a girl is into them. It starts of probabilistic , if you are at a bar and notice a girl looking at your direction and does a hair flip, the answer would be, Can’t Tell. It also goes off the rails in the sense that the video leads to dates, and physical contact as still , Can’t Tell. Although this video in particular doesnt have the Real talk part of the video as i mentioned above.

This channel employs a technique of a 5 year old drawing. It is Stick Drawings, it has minimal object on screen, Photoshoped faces for some characters most notably Natalie  Dormer as characters. The creators face is a stick drawing with curly hair and eye angles to convey emotions, mouth are also drawn differently to convey fear. It also has minimal animations, reversing a face to show directions. But the audience can tell what is going on even if it is one frame changing.

His style of content is incredibly minimalist almost it appears that no effort was put into making it but it is so smart. In the witting, the pacing, the pauses were perfect to create an entertaining video.
